Maybe, if between us, we could have said
one simple truth to each other
instead of wallowing in innuendo
and lies, the kind of high school
patter between homecoming queens
and quarterbacks,
the kind of superficial nonsense
that gets people married
and divorced,
people who should have never been married,
people who never once, not once
told each other
the truth.
