PAST POETRY MORE POETRY

It would happen, every so often.
Fear would skitter a piece of chalk
across a blackboard in her mind,
jarring her from sleep,
then having seized her attention,
would print a long list of
awful eventualities.

Curiously, this morning, it was
a string of cliches that appeared,
TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST
OF YOUR LIFE, DON'T CRY OVER SPILLED MILK, WAKE UP AND SMELL
THE COFFEE....

She got up, dumped three scoops
of Kona blend into Mr. Coffee,
while the daffy orators kept on
spouting more run-on adages:
CELEBRATE THE MOMENTS OF YOUR LIFE
ON A MORNING THAT'S BROKEN LIKE
THE FIRST MORNIING RISE TO THE
OCCASION DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF IT'S ALL SMALL STUFF....

She filled her cup, told them to hush, and in the dark living room heard
her neighbor's hacking cough,
the click of the wall clock,
the moan of a freight train.

Then came a tsunami of sadness,
great swells of ragged weeping,
sweeping all the stale words away,
leaving grief, too new, too fresh
for speech.
