Subject: Still Life With Oysters and Lemon Nonfiction by Mark Doty
Date: February 7, 2001
From: Parnell
You've captured the essence of Doty's latest perfectly - and the
introduction of Winterson! The necessity of viewing art - the sensory
details that move us all to revere and question great work, the
inspiration and examination that follows, all of this is still life, a
stopped moment. A pause. And then another look. Great review, Rachel.

After reading this story I thought to myself:
"What a manipulation. How degrading to the reader."
And then I promptly went to the library and checked out Slavin's book
of similar manipulations.

Subject: Meet Richard Yates by Elizabeth Cox

From: Michael Leone
Hi Elizabeth Cox,
I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed your anecdote about
Yates, and wished there was more! You're lucky to have met him. He's
one of my favorite writers and I've studied his books scrupulously. I
also make sure I hand out his books to my friends, who in turn, pass
him on. There's a collected stories coming out in the spring. Maybe
there's a Yates revival? I will most certainly look into your own
work, being a Yates fan yourself.
Cheers,
Michael Leone

Hi, just a quick query for any clued up culture vultures out there.
Can anybody give me more information upon the author Isaac Jackson?
I've a manuscript of his called 'Life In Progress.' It's good but
nobody seems to know what he's doing both personally and
professionally or have any contacts for him. His agent told me that he
last saw Isaac heading off to Ireland 6 months ago to do some research. I'd like to get into some more of his
stuff. Any ideas?

Have you checked out Tom Paine's collection of short stories, Scar
Vegas? Or Karen Shepherd's An Empire of Women. Both excellent,
although I thought the ending in Empire a bit weak.

Great story! Please convey my admiration to author Julia Slavin!!
(Also find the enlarged font to my liking...been a while since I've
been back, yes. Doubt this is a new innovation. Main reason I did
not come back sooner was the tiny font...anyway, that's what showed up
on my browser.)
Best wishes, always,
