Richard Yates is my all time favorite writer. I am so glad you are keeping him alive on the internet. When I go to bookstores I always ask for books by Richard Yates. There are never any in stock. It is a great loss.
Subject: On A Scale of One to Three by Douglas Lain
Date: January 23, 2001
From: Edward Morris Jr
On a scale of one to three, I give the fiction of Douglas Lain eleven and three quarters.
As a practicing author myself, I constantly look for things that are going to shock the shit out of me. And I have worked with Doug for months, but lagged on reading his work just because I lag in general. There are not enough hours in the Mayan calendar, etc. etc…

Great essay on Lish and your experience with him. I've read this over and over. My critique group has used this article as the basis of discussions about first sentences. You've done us a great service. Is the guy still alive?
