PAST POETRY MORE POETRY

Throat deep crimson at the blade,
What's another garter more or less?
The envelope I dropped and raised the spade,
The Committee wishes me success.

What's another garter more or less?
The dusty scales, the sunset eyes;
The Committee wishes me success,
Quick to draw the beetles and the flies.

The dusty scales, the sunset eyes,
Reptiles seem the quickest to degrade,
Quick to draw the beetles and the flies,
Lashing at the blade.

Reptiles seem the quickest to degrade,
The common heart is emptying the well;
Lashing at the blade,
Beyond regret, what is left to tell?

The common heart is emptying the well,
The longer length crawls headless in the grass;
Beyond regret, what is left to tell?
Heaven bruised where the sun falls fast.

The longer length crawls headless in the grass,
I dropped the envelope and raised the spade,
Bruised heaven where the sun falls fast,
Throat deep crimson shade.
